Keep South Carolina Wild

Plishing Challenge

Have you recently learned to fish? Are you a lifelong angler? Either way, you are in the right spot! PLISHING is a combination of the Swedish phrase “plocka upp”, meaning (litter) pick up, and fishing! Join our challenge and, as you set out on your fishing adventures, you can log your fish as well as litter you pick up and dispose of properly. Each fish caught, fish released, and bag of litter collected can earn you prizes (in addition to enjoying the outdoors and practicing conservation!) Click here to get started!

Spiders of September

Some call them “creepy” and some call them “cool.” Either way, spiders are infinitely interesting, and this workshop is designed to help you discover some the amazing attributes that make them so. We’ll have opportunities to distinguish the sexes of spiders, surely a skill you’ve long desired to acquire. Through our discussion and discovery you’ll gain a better understanding of the different types of webs spiders spin, including how and why they are spun. Their silk is symbolic of the many connections they make in nature, and we’ll have conversations about that too.

We’ll talk about identification of the most common species found around the home. Of course our time together will include a walk in the woods to search for and identify woodland species. Because many spiders tend to reach maturity in the fall, they make themselves a bit more available for study this time of year. Since we’ll be at Goodale State Park, we’ll reserve the right to get a bit distracted if we see something other than a spider that warrants discussion. However, we’ll try to keep it focused and certainly fun.

At the end of the day, you’ll be able to:

1.    Identify several species of spiders common in residential and woodland settings
2.    Describe basic aspects of spider natural history
3.    Appreciate the relationships between spiders and their environment
4.    Feel confident and equipped in moving forward into your own study of spiders

Where:  This training will take place at Goodale State Park, in the midlands and Sandhills Region of South Carolina.  Meet at Picnic Shelter #1, more detailed directions will be sent in advance of the class.  The website, which includes general directions, can be found by clicking here.

When:  September 9, 2025. We’ll meet at 9:00 AM, and conclude at 2:00 PM.

Who: This training is open to the public. No prior knowledge is required. Minimum age is 16. For SC Master Naturalists who have not taken a spider course, this event can count as Advanced Training and towards your statewide certification if you need a Sandhills component. Lunch will last thirty minutes, so depending on when we finish, this will count for approximately four and a half hours of training. If you are not a Master Naturalist, just come have fun with us.

This class will be taught by Austin Jenkins, who teaches and facilitates the popular Midlands Master Naturalist class for the South Carolina Wildlife Federation.  Jenkins teaches Natural History of South Carolina at USC Sumter.

Day of the Dragon

This class is full! You can add yourself to the waiting list here.

Join us for an investigation into the exciting natural history of dragonflies and damselflies! These majestic creatures grace our waters on the wing throughout the summer in South Carolina, where we boast over a hundred species that come in all shapes, sizes, and incredible colors.

Goodale State Park, in the heart of the South Carolina Sandhills, is bursting with a bountiful regiment of these regal creatures. During our day, we’ll analyze each part of the dragonfly, from the eyes to legs to the wings to the tail, investigating the related biology of each aspect. We’ll mosey down to the aquatic habitats the dragons call home. This includes a large millpond that hosts a large number of skimmers, pennants, and pond damsels. We’ll also investigate the backwoods, where the running water gives rise to a completely different assemblage of dragons and damsels, to include jewelwings, rubyspots, and several dancer species.

In addition to surveying the sky, we’ll use the dip nets to capture larval dragonflies and damselflies, examining their differences and underwater lifestyles along with the associated biota with which they coexist. Dragonfly life also demands diverse aquatic vegetation, and we’ll discuss several of these plant species and the important strata they form upon the water.

By the end of the day, you’ll be able to:
1.    Discuss the connections between form and function of dragonfly anatomy
2.    Successfully identify several species of dragonflies and damselflies
3.    Understand the variety of ecological requirements needed to support dragonfly life
4.    Predict species assemblages associated with particular aquatic habitats

Where: This training will take place at Goodale State Park just outside of Camden, South Carolina. Meet at Picnic Shelter 1. Enter the park and just keep driving. Go past the community building, past the ranger station, and around the bend where dragonflies dwell. The website, which includes directions, can be found by clicking here.

When: Tuesday, June 17. We will meet at 9:00 AM. The day will conclude sometime around 2:00 PM.

Who: This training is open to the public. No prior knowledge is required. Minimum age is 16. For SC Master Naturalists who have not taken a dragonfly course, this event can count as Advanced Training (4.5 training hours) and towards your statewide certification if you need a Sandhills component. If you are not a Master Naturalist, just come have fun with us. Participants will also receive contact info of other participants to allow for carpooling to the park.

Would you like to learn more about snakes, while having the opportunity to see several SC species? Come walk with Jay Keck to hear about the variety of snakes we have in the Southeast, what habitats support which species, and which species are in your area. We’ll explore a paradise – Phinizy Swamp – in search of cottonmouths, racers, rat snakes, rough green snakes, water snakes, and more! Please join us for a great day celebrating our sometimes-misunderstood snakes of SC and GA!

***As a bonus, neo-tropical migratory birds like the Hooded Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, and Yellow-billed Cuckoo, might be seen in the area, so bring your binoculars to experience their amazing journey!

When: This class is from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. The rain date is Thursday, May 22.

Where: Phinizy Swamp.

Cost: $60 per person.

Instructor: This class will be led by Jay Keck, SCWF Habitat Education Manager. Jay has been a passionate nature and bird lover since his early teens. He lives in Chapin, SC with his wife and two boys, and has identified 108 bird species in his yard in three years, as well as 187 species in Lexington county since moving back in September of 2013. He has viewed birds in Spain, Chile, Honduras, and Costa Rica, as well as many areas in SC from the mountains to the coast. Being inspired by SCWF’s mission, he earned his Palmetto Pro Birder certification, and has led bird walks for SCWF as well as Saluda Shoals park, Columbia Audubon, and private organizations. Even when he is golfing, hunting, or fishing, he is secretly birding. At SCWF, Jay coordinates the Wildlife And Industry Together (WAIT) program as well as leading birding classes for the Palmetto Pro Birder & Midlands Master Naturalist programs.

Palmetto Outdoors Women’s Retreat

We are thrilled to offer this year’s POWR (Palmetto Outdoors Women’s Retreat) at the Clemson Outdoor Lab on the beautiful shores of Lake Hartwell in Pendleton near Clemson. This event is designed for women to experience nature and outdoor recreation with like-minded ladies in a non-competitive environment.

Archery, nature hikes, kayaking, fishing, outdoor cooking, and photography are just a few of the 19 classes from which to choose. Participants will have the opportunity to select up to 8 classes and be introduced to many outdoor activities.

POWR 2025 Classes

Archery– As a beginner archer, this course will teach you about different bows and the gear you’ll need. You will learn the steps to take when shooting an arrow, and most importantly, how to shoot your bow and arrow safely.

Backyard Wildlife Habitat– Would you like to enjoy more nature in your own backyard? Learn techniques and plans for providing food, water, cover, and places to raise young for wildlife right on your property. You will get information on how to supply a natural habitat for a variety of birds, butterflies, and other wildlife.

Birding– Take in the beauty and sounds of the forest while your instructor helps you build your basic birding skills!  Start a bird list so you can check off birds that you see while on this adventure using field observations, field guides, and identifying marks and calls. Your instructor will provide excellent guidance on exactly what to look for to help you identify these colorful birds. Please bring your favorite pair of binoculars if you can. There will be some to loan if needed.

Canoeing– Canoeing is one of the most relaxing ways to enjoy the outdoors. Learn basic strokes and how to have a safe outing, on a river or lake.  You will get to enjoy a nice paddle around the park as you practice what you learn.

Fire Building– Love camping but always struggle to make a fire? This class will help you learn the best ways to create long lasting campfires the right way. Learn how to set it up, tend it, and why you need “special wood” in certain locations.

Fishing Basics– Learn the fundamentals of freshwater fishing including what type of equipment to use, knots, and rigging your rod. Once you are all rigged and ready, you will learn how to bait your hook and cast so you can hit the water!  *A valid SC freshwater fishing license is required.

Fly Fishing– This class will introduce you to fly fishing basics; understanding a fly rod and how it works, which fly rod to use or which fish species, fly selection, and introduce you to the world of fly casting.  The hands-on casting instruction will have you ready to go fly fishing on your local river or stream.

Hunting Basics– Are you curious about or wanted to try hunting but have no idea how to get started? Well, let the experts show you some basic concepts such as types of hunting, what is a tree stand, who do I hunt with, where do I hunt, what should I take with me, and how do I dress for the occasion. All these questions will be answered and so many more.

Kayaking– If you are new to kayaking or have some experience kayaking, this is the class for you! We will be covering safety, how to enter and exit a kayak as well as paddling techniques. A small amount of instruction will take place on shore but most instruction will take place on the water. After the instruction on the water, we will practice our new skills. (Please feel free to bring your own life jacket.)

Land Navigation: Staying Found– You have your compass in hand. Now what? We will cover the basics of bearings (directions) – how to find them, walk them, measure them, and get where you’re going on foot. We will also discuss how to read a topographic map, and how that and your compass and a good pair of boots can get you to the ‘X.’ Wear clothes and footwear for walking outside, even in light rain.

Nature Crafts– You don’t have to be crafty to bring coastal nature indoors with this fun class. Join us to create several beautiful projects from nature’s craft store. We will help you, step-by-step, make beautiful crafts suitable for gift giving – but you may want to keep them all for yourself!

Nature Hike– Join us in a leisurely walk as we explore the area around Lake Hartwell. We will look for indicator plants to help identify the ecosystem and geologic region.

Nature Spa– Learn how to use and enjoy beauty secrets from Mother Nature’s pantry. Come with a clean face because you will get to try some first-hand! Learn how to give yourself a facial and make a couple of body treatments with ingredients you may already have at home. Everyone will enjoy a facial while sharing nature’s beauty tips with each other. Your face and hands will feel wonderful by the end of this class. Handouts will describe what we do in class so you can enjoy what you learned when you get home.

Outdoor Cooking– Learn to cook a simple and delicious meal at your campsite, in your Dutch oven, or on the grill. Cook some of your favorite foods in an unconventional way.

Outdoor Photography: Do You See What I See?– Pictures of beautiful sunsets, mountains, beaches…yawwwn. We’ve all taken photos that just don’t matter much once we get back home. So let’s learn to make photos that are meaningful every time you look at them. We will focus (pun intended!) mostly on composition and seeing the things we normally miss that make an OK photo a WOW photo. And because this is the Outdoor Photography class, we will be outside a lot (weather permitting). So wear good walking shoes and trail clothes, and rain gear in case we venture out and get caught in a sprinkle. And bring a camera/phone that you are comfortable with.

Outdoor Yoga– Reconnect with earth and spirit in this all-levels, alignment-based class.  We will begin with a brief period of centering and contemplation followed by an active warm up. Class will end with a period of deep relaxation. *Please note that this will not last for the full class period.

Rifle Basics – Basic rifle class is for people who have little-to-no experience with rifles. Participants will learn about safety, handling, and techniques that are required to properly handle and shoot rifles. This class includes a live fire component. Participants may bring their own firearm, but ammunition will not be provided for personal firearms (you will need to bring your own ammunition).

SASS Self Defense for Women– Participants are trained physically and mentally to counter the most common threats to their safety from simple grabs to strangulation scenarios. This course is paramount to creating a community of women and girls who know they are worth the fight!

Shotgun Basics– This course teaches the safe and efficient use of a shotgun. We begin with stance, eye dominance then move to the types of shotguns, and ammunition. You will also learn about target shooting competitions such as skeet and trap and will get the opportunity to practice taking aim at clay targets. All necessary equipment for this class is provided.
