Keep South Carolina Wild

Palmetto Pro Birders: Wateree River Heritage Preserve

Are you ready to bird at the peak of spring migration? Are you ready to explore a 3,674 acre preserve right outside of Columbia? If so, reserve your place for this high-energy bird walk that will begin at Cook’s Mountain, which is positioned 372 feet above sea level, giving us a unique view of the landscape. Ibis, herons, egrets, birds of prey, and songbirds can be seen from this vantage point.

We will then travel down the “mountain” to fields and floodplain in search of warblers, tanagers, buntings, and if we’re lucky a noisy flock of bobolink. This will be a more intense birding walk, focusing on getting the participants views of as many bird species as possible, which might create some perspiration, but it will also create lifelong memories, and hopefully new birds on your life-list. If you would like to pack your lunch, we can all eat together at the tables at the top of the mountain after the class concludes.

Who: This walk is open to the public. No prior knowledge is required. Minimum age is 16.  This event will count for one day toward Palmetto Pro Birder certification (8 days needed total). For SC Master Naturalists, this can count as Advanced Training and towards your statewide certification if you need a Sandhills component. Lunch will last thirty minutes, so depending on when we finish, this class will count for approximately 4.5 hours of training. If you are not a Pro Birder or Master Naturalist, just come have fun with us.

When: Monday, May 5th from 7:00 am – 11:00 am. Rain Date is Tuesday, May 6th.

Where:  Wateree Heritage Preserve, Eastover, SC

Instructor: This class will be led by Jay Keck, SCWF Habitat Education Manager. Jay has been a passionate nature and bird lover since his early teens. He lives in Chapin, SC with his wife and two boys, and has identified 108 bird species in his yard in three years, as well as 187 species in Lexington county since moving back in September of 2013. He has viewed birds in Spain, Chile, Honduras, and Costa Rica, as well as many areas in SC from the mountains to the coast. Being inspired by SCWF’s mission, he earned his Palmetto Pro Birder certification, and has led bird walks for SCWF as well as Saluda Shoals park, Columbia Audubon, and private organizations. Even when he is golfing, hunting, or fishing, he is secretly birding. At SCWF, Jay coordinates the Wildlife And Industry Together (WAIT) program as well as leading birding classes for the Palmetto Pro Birder & Midlands Master Naturalist programs.

Palmetto Pro Birders: Lake Murray Paddle

Have you ever seen hundreds of beautiful cliff swallows nesting under a bridge? What about red-headed woodpeckers, and possibly prothonotary warblers, nesting in natural cavities along the shores of Lake Murray?  If this sounds exciting to you, please join Jay Keck, as he leads a small group of kayakers along the shores of an undeveloped portion of Lake Murray. Along with birds previously mentioned, hooded warblers, summer tanagers, and other neo-tropical migrants could be seen as you kayak through the tree-lined coves and creeks of the lake. We’ll only be taking 6 participants so sign up quickly to reserve your spot on this special birding adventure.

Palmetto Outdoors Women’s Retreat

We are thrilled to offer this year’s POWR (Palmetto Outdoors Women’s Retreat) at the Clemson Outdoor Lab on the beautiful shores of Lake Hartwell in Pendleton near Clemson. This event is designed for women to experience nature and outdoor recreation with like-minded ladies in a non-competitive environment.

Archery, nature hikes, kayaking, fishing, outdoor cooking, and photography are just a few of the 19 classes from which to choose. Participants will have the opportunity to select up to 8 classes and be introduced to many outdoor activities.

POWR 2025 Classes

Archery– As a beginner archer, this course will teach you about different bows and the gear you’ll need. You will learn the steps to take when shooting an arrow, and most importantly, how to shoot your bow and arrow safely.

Backyard Wildlife Habitat– Would you like to enjoy more nature in your own backyard? Learn techniques and plans for providing food, water, cover, and places to raise young for wildlife right on your property. You will get information on how to supply a natural habitat for a variety of birds, butterflies, and other wildlife.

Birding– Take in the beauty and sounds of the forest while your instructor helps you build your basic birding skills!  Start a bird list so you can check off birds that you see while on this adventure using field observations, field guides, and identifying marks and calls. Your instructor will provide excellent guidance on exactly what to look for to help you identify these colorful birds. Please bring your favorite pair of binoculars if you can. There will be some to loan if needed.

Canoeing– Canoeing is one of the most relaxing ways to enjoy the outdoors. Learn basic strokes and how to have a safe outing, on a river or lake.  You will get to enjoy a nice paddle around the park as you practice what you learn.

Fire Building– Love camping but always struggle to make a fire? This class will help you learn the best ways to create long lasting campfires the right way. Learn how to set it up, tend it, and why you need “special wood” in certain locations.

Fishing Basics– Learn the fundamentals of freshwater fishing including what type of equipment to use, knots, and rigging your rod. Once you are all rigged and ready, you will learn how to bait your hook and cast so you can hit the water!  *A valid SC freshwater fishing license is required.

Fly Fishing– This class will introduce you to fly fishing basics; understanding a fly rod and how it works, which fly rod to use or which fish species, fly selection, and introduce you to the world of fly casting.  The hands-on casting instruction will have you ready to go fly fishing on your local river or stream.

Hunting Basics– Are you curious about or wanted to try hunting but have no idea how to get started? Well, let the experts show you some basic concepts such as types of hunting, what is a tree stand, who do I hunt with, where do I hunt, what should I take with me, and how do I dress for the occasion. All these questions will be answered and so many more.

Kayaking– If you are new to kayaking or have some experience kayaking, this is the class for you! We will be covering safety, how to enter and exit a kayak as well as paddling techniques. A small amount of instruction will take place on shore but most instruction will take place on the water. After the instruction on the water, we will practice our new skills. (Please feel free to bring your own life jacket.)

Land Navigation: Staying Found– You have your compass in hand. Now what? We will cover the basics of bearings (directions) – how to find them, walk them, measure them, and get where you’re going on foot. We will also discuss how to read a topographic map, and how that and your compass and a good pair of boots can get you to the ‘X.’ Wear clothes and footwear for walking outside, even in light rain.

Nature Crafts– You don’t have to be crafty to bring coastal nature indoors with this fun class. Join us to create several beautiful projects from nature’s craft store. We will help you, step-by-step, make beautiful crafts suitable for gift giving – but you may want to keep them all for yourself!

Nature Hike– Join us in a leisurely walk as we explore the area around Lake Hartwell. We will look for indicator plants to help identify the ecosystem and geologic region.

Nature Spa– Learn how to use and enjoy beauty secrets from Mother Nature’s pantry. Come with a clean face because you will get to try some first-hand! Learn how to give yourself a facial and make a couple of body treatments with ingredients you may already have at home. Everyone will enjoy a facial while sharing nature’s beauty tips with each other. Your face and hands will feel wonderful by the end of this class. Handouts will describe what we do in class so you can enjoy what you learned when you get home.

Outdoor Cooking– Learn to cook a simple and delicious meal at your campsite, in your Dutch oven, or on the grill. Cook some of your favorite foods in an unconventional way.

Outdoor Photography: Do You See What I See?– Pictures of beautiful sunsets, mountains, beaches…yawwwn. We’ve all taken photos that just don’t matter much once we get back home. So let’s learn to make photos that are meaningful every time you look at them. We will focus (pun intended!) mostly on composition and seeing the things we normally miss that make an OK photo a WOW photo. And because this is the Outdoor Photography class, we will be outside a lot (weather permitting). So wear good walking shoes and trail clothes, and rain gear in case we venture out and get caught in a sprinkle. And bring a camera/phone that you are comfortable with.

Outdoor Yoga– Reconnect with earth and spirit in this all-levels, alignment-based class.  We will begin with a brief period of centering and contemplation followed by an active warm up. Class will end with a period of deep relaxation. *Please note that this will not last for the full class period.

Rifle Basics – Basic rifle class is for people who have little-to-no experience with rifles. Participants will learn about safety, handling, and techniques that are required to properly handle and shoot rifles. This class includes a live fire component. Participants may bring their own firearm, but ammunition will not be provided for personal firearms (you will need to bring your own ammunition).

SASS Self Defense for Women– Participants are trained physically and mentally to counter the most common threats to their safety from simple grabs to strangulation scenarios. This course is paramount to creating a community of women and girls who know they are worth the fight!

Shotgun Basics– This course teaches the safe and efficient use of a shotgun. We begin with stance, eye dominance then move to the types of shotguns, and ammunition. You will also learn about target shooting competitions such as skeet and trap and will get the opportunity to practice taking aim at clay targets. All necessary equipment for this class is provided.

Palmetto Pro Birders: ACE Basin

This winter module will take us to the “ends of the earth”-well almost–at least as far as South Carolina is concerned! We will visit the Palmetto State’s ACE Basin where birds abound in one of the east coast’s premiere birding areas. We’ll concentrate on wintering waterfowl and the wetlands they require. The Bear Island and Donnelley WMAs are featherful destinations that should not be missed!

287 bird species have been recorded on eBird at Bear Island, with Donnelley close behind at 264. Along with waterfowl, many types of songbirds, birds of prey, shorebirds, herons, ibis, and even Tundra Swans should be seen. Come join us for these spectacular days in the field at two of the birdiest properties in our state!

SCWF Art Contest – “Forks, Knives, & Spoonbills” Menu Art

Calling all local artists! The South Carolina Wildlife Federation is launching our fifth statewide art contest to design the menu art for our 2025 Forks, Knives, & Spoonbills conservation dinner series. For these events, SCWF partners with local chefs throughout the state to create culinary dining experiences themed around imperiled wildlife species.

The winner of the art contest will have their art featured on each menu of the dinner series. The first dinner is scheduled for March.

Local artists are encouraged to submit an image file of their design that includes all six of the wildlife species that will be featured in the 2025 dinner series (see below).

Please see below for this year’s featured species.

1. Roseate Spoonbill: Increasing after almost disappearing from the US in the early 1900’s.

South Carolina’s only pink bird, some people confuse it with a Flamingo at first sight. The color comes from the foods they eat, which include crustaceans, and other aquatic invertebrates, though they’ll also eat fish. The bill is long and flat and wide at the end, similar to a wooden spoon one would use in the kitchen while cooking. It’s a coastal bird that has increased its population in SC after almost being hunted to extinction in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

2. Cerulean Warbler: 50-year decline of 63%

This species can be found in the Appalachian mountains in large tracts of forests with tall trees. Unfortunately habit like this in the US has declined, but wintering habitat has also declined, contributing to its significant reduction in population.  One of the mnemonics for this bird is “burr, burr, burr, I’m gonna freeze!”, which helps one find the bird while traveling along the Blue-Ridge Parkway during early summer. The male has a bright blue back with a blue neck band and black streaking on its sides.

3. American Redstart: Population is declining in the US but increasing in Canada.

This bright orange, black, and white bird can take people by surprise when it’s first seen. Often called the “Halloween bird” because of its coloration, it is rarely seen on October 31st, as most have flown back to their wintering grounds in Mexico, Central and South America. Though they feed on insects during the breeding season, they include fruits and berries in their diet during late summer.

4. Golden-crowned Kinglet: 50-year decline of 32%

This energetic and beautiful bird visits SC in the winter time when many of the other colorful songbirds have left for the tropics. The two black lines on the top of its head border a lemon-yellow crest that it can raise and drop depending on its mood. Though small, these birds are tough, and have been seen wintering in areas where nighttime temperatures can reach -40 degrees Fahrenheit.

5. Belted Kingfisher: 50-year decline of 38%

These widespread stocky birds have a shaggy blue crest on their large heads. The male and female both have a blue breast band, but only the females have the rusty band on their belly. It can be found throughout the state in lakes, marshes, swamps, ponds, and many other wet areas that have an abundance of aquatic food. Fish, crayfish, and other aquatic animals are usually on its menu. These long-distanced wanderers have even been seen in Iceland, the Azores, Greenland, the Netherlands, and even Hawaii.

6. Canada Warbler: 50-year decline of 62%

Canada Warbler males are steely grey on the back and bright yellow below, with a dark black “necklace”. They travel 3,000 miles to the US and Canada from their wintering grounds in Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Peru. You can find them breeding in shrubs, ferns, or rhododendrons, below the forest canopy in the Appalachian mountains of the Southeast.
