WAIT Partner Update: Michelin LPG

October 30, 2026

This month, we’re highlighting another outstanding WAIT partner and Michelin property in Laurens County: LPG, also known as Laurens Proving Grounds! Being one of the largest WAIT properties with approximately 3,500 acres, it is no surprise it is one of the most diverse in terms of wildlife and habitat.
Our Industry Habitat Manager, Jay Keck, recently conducted a wildlife inventory survey which revealed a variety of habitats such as, pine savannah, early-successional, wetlands, riparian corridors, as well as mature forest with gaps. These varying habitats support a rich diversity of birds, especially neo-tropical migratory species as they fly through South Carolina, or stay to breed within our borders.
Acadian Flycatchers, Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Hooded and Kentucky Warblers, Wood Thrush, and Prothonotary Warblers have been recorded on the property, indicating a healthy diversity of habitat supporting a variety of birds with specific habitat needs. Chimney Swifts also feed above the canopy, suggesting an abundance of insects in and above the property, which supports these energetic aerial insectivores.
In all, 93 bird species have been recorded here, and with plans to complete more inventories and install nest boxes for additional species, we feel this number will only grow in the years to come. Thank you to Michelin LPG for not only providing a diversity of wildlife habitat, but also providing the data to support what species are benefiting from the property’s diversity.
