Spartanburg Water is a public utility serving the residents of Spartanburg County in water treatment, wastewater treatment, and watershed management.  Spartanburg Water is proudly committed to protecting public health, being good stewards of the environment, and supporting our community's desired quality of life.  Spartanburg Water has taken a leading role in environmental protection by providing technical assistance to environmental organizations, developing beneficial environmental programs, educating employees and the public on watershed protection, developing and implementing a comprehensive buffer management plan for Lake Blalock, and hosting annual Lake Sweep events.  This demonstration of environmental excellence demonstrates Spartanburg Water's merit in the industry and commitment to protecting the environment. 

Community wildlife education projects include:

  • educating lake residents on the importance of buffer lands adjacent to Lake Blalock.
  • conducting Pontoon Classrooms and 4-H20 Summer Camps educating students on wildlife protection, watersheds, water safety and water conservation.
  • Added Conservation and Stewardship sections on the company website to educate the public on the importance of water conservation and watersheds.
  • The Watershed Watchdogs Program offers citizens the opportunity to monitor the watershed for potential threats to wildlife and water quality. 
  • Provide informational brochures & booklets on Hexastylis naniflora and Fish Species of South Carolina in the Lake Blalock Wardens' office. 
  • Plans to develop posters on fish attractors and one on wood duck boxes

Habitat protection and enhancement activities include:

  • implemented the Lake Blalock Buffer Management Plan
  • implemented fish attractor program for homeowners and public, Boy Scouts placed 6 fish attractors in the lake.
  • constructed an osprey nesting platform
  • placed 6 wood duck boxes in Lake Blalock to be monitored twice per year.  They will continue adding wood duck boxes until there are 30 in the lake.
