Would you like to help out on the oil spill response?

South Carolina Wildlife Federation is watching with dismay as the Gulf Oil Spill drama unfolds.   The linked article is understandably lengthy because it describes failure after failure by both BP and federal officials.  We hope the oil does not invade South Carolina’s pristine coastline, but hopefully, our citizenry can learn from the tragedy in the Gulf if the unthinkable occurs here.  Meanwhile, we intend to set up a website for coordinating activities if and when oil strikes SC.

Most importantly, do you have ideas for what should be on the website and can we put you down as part of a “SC Oil Spill Response Army Reserve Team”?

You also can contact us for information about current volunteer efforts in the Gulf states.

With frustration and anger mounting over failure after failure in the Gulf oil spill response, check out this article from Alabama.  It’s impossible to know what the impacts are going to be in South Carolina, but one thing is for sure:  South Carolinians better not assume that BP and the Feds will take care of any problems. Many people, including the “experts” have many questions and few answers about the ultimate outcome of the oil spill in the Gulf.  This article does answer one question we have wondered about:  How much scrutiny was given to the possible consequences if things go bad?  Here’s the answer: Thanks to BP lobbying, not much.

This link "U.S. exempted BP's Gulf of Mexico drilling from environmental impact study" Washington Post is also very informative on other aspects of the spill.

We will continue to keep you posted, especially on possible impacts on South Carolina waters and wildlife.
